Journey to Spain’s Deep South (Almería and Granada)
We set off beside the Mediterranean, in the heart of the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, where the sea and volcanic rock mark the beginning of the adventure.
From there, we ride towards the legendary Tabernas Desert, linking curves through the spectacular Velefique Pass and crossing the Sierra de los Filabres to the surroundings of the Negratín Reservoir.
The route continues through the almost lunar landscapes of the Gorafe Desert and the Sierra de Baza, culminating beneath the imposing silhouette of La Calahorra Castle, with Sierra Nevada as a dramatic backdrop.
Desert, high mountains and endless curves. Three days to discover the wildest south on two wheels.
The only desert in continental Europe
From the coast, we venture into the Tabernas Desert.
An arid, almost cinematic landscape, where the road cuts through dry riverbeds and badlands that look straight out of a western movie. Here, the horizon is endless and the feeling of isolation is absolute.
The contrast with the sea is immediate. Brutal.
The Stelvio of the South and the highest observatory in Europe
Riding to this point means going from arid desert to high mountains in just a matter of hours. A contrast hard to find anywhere else in southern Europe.
We climb the Velefique Pass, known among riders as the “Stelvio of the South.”
Perfectly carved hairpin bends, clean asphalt, and an ascent that feels designed to enjoy every line.
We continue to the Calar Alto Observatory, the highest astronomical observatory in continental Europe.
We literally ride above the clouds. In just a few hours, we have gone from sea level to high mountains.
Iron, emptiness and horizon
The route takes us towards the high plateau of Granada, where the landscape opens up and silence becomes the main character.
There stands the Baúl Bridge, an abandoned railway structure crossing the void like an iron scar in the middle of the land.
It was designed by the engineer Gustave Eiffel, the same man who created the iconic Eiffel Tower.
19th-century iron in the middle of an almost lunar landscape.
Gorafe: The Broken Land
After the high plateau, the route enters one of the most striking landscapes in southern Spain: Gorafe.
Here, the land is not flat. It is broken.
Cut by ravines, gullies and canyons sculpted by time over millions of years.
The road winds between reddish clay walls and formations that seem taken straight from Mars. There are no forests, no shade, no distractions. Only horizon, silence and curves crossing an almost unreal landscape.
From the Renaissance to the High Mountains
After miles of desert and ravines, the castle appears like a stone mirage, reminding us that this land was always a frontier.
In the middle of the high plateau, when the landscape seems endless, the silhouette of La Calahorra Castle emerges.
Isolated, sober, imposing.
A 16th-century Renaissance fortress dominating the plain from the top of a hill.
And just when it feels like we’ve seen it all, the route changes skin once again.
We enter the Sierra de Baza, where the landscape rises and transforms.
The asphalt twists between pine forests, ravines and natural viewpoints.
The air is cooler, the light clearer.
Constant curves, solitary stretches and that feeling of riding in the heart of untamed nature, far from everything.
From the arid plateau to living mountains.
From the silence of the desert to the whisper of the forest.
